    A Comparison of GPU Tessellation Strategies for Multisided Patches

    We propose an augmentation of the traditional tessellation pipeline with several different strategies that efficiently render multisided patches using generalised barycentric coordinates. The strategies involve different subdivision steps and the usage of textures. In addition, we show that adaptive tessellation techniques naturally extend to some of these strategies whereas others need a slight adjustment. The technique of Loop et al. [LSNC09], commonly known as ACC-2, is extended to multisided faces to illustrate the effectiveness of multisided techniques. A performance and quality comparison is made between the different strategies and remarks on the techniques and implementation details are provided

    Feature-Adaptive and Hierarchical Subdivision Gradient Meshes

    Gradient meshes, an advanced vector graphics primitive, are widely used by designers for creating scalable vector graphics. Traditional variants require a regular rectangular topology, which is a severe design restriction. The more advanced subdivision gradient mesh allows for an arbitrary manifold topology and is based on subdivision techniques to define the resulting colour surface. This also allows the artists to manipulate the geometry and colours at various levels of subdivision. Recent advances allow for the interpolation of both geometry and colour, local detail following edits at coarser subdivision levels and sharp colour transitions. A shortcoming of all existing methods is their dependence on global refinement, which makes them unsuitable for real-time (commercial) design applications. We present a novel method that incorporates the idea of feature-adaptive subdivision and uses approximating patches suitable for hardware tessellation with real-time performance. Further novel features include multiple interaction mechanisms and self-intersection prevention during interactive design/editing

    Effects of experience and opponents on pacing behavior and 2-km cycling performance of novice youths

    Purpose: To study the pacing behavior and performance of novice youth exercisers in a controlled laboratory setting. Method: Ten healthy participants (seven male, three female, 15.8 ± 1.0 years) completed four, 2-km trials on a Velotron cycling ergometer. Visit 1 was a familiarization trial. Visits 2 to 4 involved the following conditions, in randomized order: no opponent (NO), a virtual opponent (starting slow and finishing fast) (OP-SLOWFAST), and a virtual opponent (starting fast and finishing slow) (OP-FASTSLOW). Repeated measurement ANOVAs (p < .05) were used to examine differences in both pacing behavior and also performance related to power output, finishing- and split times, and RPE between the four successive visits and the three conditions. Expected performance outcome was measured using a questionnaire. Results: Power output increased (F3,27 = 5.651, p = .004, η2p = .386) and finishing time decreased (F3,27 = 9.972, p .05). Conclusion: Performance was improved by an increase in experience after one visit, parallel with the ability to anticipate future workload

    Mechanism of hyperthermic potentiation of cisplatin action in cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant tumour cells.

    In this study, the mechanism(s) by which heat increases cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (cisplatin, cDDP) sensitivity in cDDP-sensitive and -resistant cell lines of murine as well as human origin were investigated. Heating cells at 43 degrees C during cDDP exposure was found to increase drug accumulation significantly in the cDDP-resistant cell lines but had little effect on drug accumulation in the cDDP-sensitive cell lines. DNA adduct formation, however, was significantly increased in all cell lines studied. Furthermore, ongoing formation of platinum (Pt)-DNA adducts after the end of cDDP treatment was enhanced and/or adduct removal was decreased in heated cells, resulting in relatively more DNA damage remaining at 24 h after the end of cDDP exposure. Correlation plots with survival revealed weak correlations with cellular Pt accumulation (r2 = 0.59) and initial Pt-DNA adduct formation (r2 = 0.64). Strong correlations, however, were found with Pt-DNA adducts at 6 h (r2 = 0.97) and 24 h (r2 = 0.89) after the incubation with the drug. In conclusion, the mechanism by which heat sensitizes cells for cDDP action seems to be the sum of multiple factors, which comprise heat effects on accumulation, adduct formation and adduct processing. This mechanism did not seem to differ between cDDP-sensitive and -resistant cells, emphasizing the potential of hyperthermia to reduce cDDP resistance

    Handcycling: training effects of a specific dose of upper body endurance training in females

    Purpose: This study aims to evaluate a handcycling training protocol based on ACSM guidelines in a well-controlled laboratory setting. Training responses of a specific dose of handcycling training were quantified in a homogeneous female subject population to obtain a more in depth understanding of physiological mechanisms underlying adaptations in upper body training. Methods: 22 female able-bodied participants were randomly divided in a training (T) and control group (C). T received 7-weeks of handcycling training, 3 × 30 min/week at 65 % heart rate reserve (HRR). An incremental handcycling test was used to determine local, exercise-specific adaptations. An incremental cycling test was performed to determine non-exercise-specific central/cardiovascular adaptations. Peak oxygen uptake (peakVO2), heart rate (peakHR) and power output (peakPO) were compared between T and C before and after training. Results: T completed the training sessions at 65 ± 3 % HRR, at increasing power output (59.4 ± 8.2 to 69.5 ± 8.9 W) over the training program. T improved on handcycling peakVO2 (+18.1 %), peakPO (+31.9 %), and peakHR (+4.0 %). No improvements were found in cycling parameters. Conclusion: Handcycling training led to local, exercise-specific improvements in upper body parameters. Results could provide input for the design of effective evidence-based training programs specifically aimed at upper body endurance exercise in females
